Is pure natural green tea extract — promoted as a natural energy booster in your drink — a good way to fight fatigue?

“The short answer is no. There are better ways to boost your energy,” says integrative medicine specialist Irina Todorov, MD.

Made from dried green tea leaves, green tea extract contains caffeine as well as plant compounds called catechins, including epigallocatechins-3-gallate (EGCG).

Green tea has been used for medicinal purposes in India and China for nearly 5,000 years.  It is made by steaming the leaves slightly before allowing them to dry out, which helps keep the plants active.

Green tea extract, like many herbal medicines, is standardized during the production stage to ensure that a certain percentage of the active ingredient is still present in the final packaging form.  The active ingredients are polyphenols in the form of flavonoids, such as catechin and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).  Polyphenols, flavonoids, catechins and EGCG are powerful antioxidants that can intervene and reduce the spread of certain types of cancer cells.  EGCG in green tea extract is said to have 100 times the antioxidant activity than vitamins C or E.

In China and Japan, where large amounts of green tea are consumed daily, statistics show lower cancer rates. A growing body of scientific research now suggests that the active ingredients in green tea may help reduce the incidence of various cancers.
