Main active ingredient from garlic extract powder is allicin. It is a good bactericide.

Allicin is physiologically active in microbial, plant and mammalian cells. In a dose-dependent manner allicin can inhibit the proliferation of both bacteria and fungi or kill cells outright, including antibiotic-resistant strains like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Allicin (diallylthiosulfinate) is a defence molecule from garlic (Allium sativum L.) with broad antimicrobial activities in the low µM range against Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, including antibiotic resistant strains, and fungi. Allicin reacts with thiol groups and can inactivate essential enzymes.

Allicin has obvious inhibition or killing effect on various pathogenic bacteria such as staphylococcus, meningitis, pneumococcus, streptococcus and diphtheria, dysentery, escherichia coli, typhoid, paratyphoid, whooping cough, tuberculosis bacillus and vibrio cholerae.

Allicin can inhibit or kill many pathogenic fungi including Candida albicans.  Low concentration mainly inhibits the growth of fungi, high concentration can completely kill fungi.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is one of the main causes of bone marrow transplant failure and death.  Clinical study found that allicin has obvious prevention and treatment effect on human cytomegalovirus infection complicated with bone marrow transplantation.
